A sukkah or succah is a temporary hut constructed for use during the week-long Jewish festival of Sukkot. It is topped with branches and often well decorated with autumnal, harvest or Judaic themes. It is common for Jews to eat, sleep and otherwise spend time in the sukkah. In Judaism, Sukkot is considered a joyous occasion and is referred to in Hebrew as Yom Simchateinu (the day of our rejoicing) or Z'man Simchateinu (the time of our rejoicing), and the sukkah itself symbolizes the frailty and transience of life and its dependence on God.r

I remember seeing several similar "hidden streets", like long backyards, on my visit to Lodz. I tried to explore one or two but felt like I was trespassing onto private property. Is this "covered balcony" regarded as a sukkah? It doesn't look very temporary, but it's an interesting construction, so much more beautiful than the rest of the building and obviously regarded as culturally more important. This is another photo on TE that has taught me something about the world.

First to the photo: fine spot taken from, shows good details within the small alley.
To the name: Sukkah is merely an open roof hut, covered with branches or more precisely a thatch and mounted on our Jewish holiday with the same name. Most times during late September or early to mid. October.
There were many Jews in Lodz prior to WW2, one of the biggest communities in Poland back in time.
My best regards and a nice weekend,

A very nice view down the courtyard. I like the perspective and the symmetry. An interesting photo of this festival in this quiet place.

A fantastic composition, with this kind of patio, where they give a series of facades, that seem to go back to the first quarter of the last century, preserve the atmosphere very well, only the car breaks a little magic, ideal the balcony covered on the door to background.
Good perspective of the image, very pleasing to the eye.
Colorful, sharpness and brightness are captured excellently.
Very good composition, magnificent presentation.
Have a good weekend.

The length of the courtyard is giving depth to the composition. The point of view is showing the details of the sukkah. It is also use in Montreal by the jewish community. Have a nice day.

The blocks of stone in 2 rows add repetition and lead in lines and perspective. The red car in the corner adds a splash of colour. Well framed with a pleasant diffused light. Tfs!

I like the view of this courtyard through one of its gates. The structure above the opposite gate is interesting, is that the sukkah? The presence of the red VW adds a nice, colorful touch.

Very interesting note. The sukkah is something completely new to me.
If I understand well you took this picture from in one entrance gate looking to another one.
This looks a little like an oasis in the city.
The two rows of stones give more depth to the picture.
Best regards, Paul

It's so nice to see this bit of Jewish culture from Poland. I can imagine the vibrant community that once existed there. This simple, enclosed balcony speaks to me in a way, whispering about history and times past.
