[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
During 2007-2008 we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of the of the eruption of the Capelinhos Volcano, in Faial Island, Azores (Açores), Portugal.
This last post of the mini-series, also scanned from a paper print, was taken in 1988, thirty years after the eruption. It is to the left of my other photo of Capelinhos area. I wish to show here the several ground colors and forms created by the volcano. A good part of the land you see here it is the newest in Portugal, created by the eruption of 1957-58. If you see the satellite view you can notice that this area, after 50 years, is still dark brown, while the rest of the island is green.
See also the Capelinhos lighthouse that once stood at the edge of the western tip of Faial Island.
More text from my previous notes:
The Capelinhos Volcano is unique and very important to vulcanologists because it was very closely observed (namely from this lighthouse, a great vantage point). It began as an underwater volcano and ended up as a land volcano. Capelinhos is an example of how the whole volcanic archipelago of the Azores was born and developed.
The eruption of the Capelinhos Volcano and its outcome destroyed the houses and farms in the parishes of Capelo and Praia do Norte and crops all over the island. The event and its aftermath disrupted the island economy. In the USA the Azorean community used its influence to allow an extraordinary quota of emigrants (the volcano victims); this reduced the island's population by one half in little over a year.
See pictures and read more about the Capelinhos Volcano at www.vulcaodoscapelinhos.org; you can choose Portuguese or English language; click VOLCANO > HISTORY, for an interesting narrative of the 1957-58 events.
In the Rui Simas (ruisimas) photo Capelinhos... you get a good general modern view of the area.

Ola Francisco,

Although scanned, it hasn't lost its quality and freshness. Very beautiful the contrast between the blue sky and the diferent ground colors. It seems a non of this planet landscape. Well found, and captured.

Hi Francisco, your mini-series of Capelinhos Volcano is very informative. I have also checked the links you have given in the note. It's really amazing to see how an eruption of a volcano could change the geographical situation and also economic and social life in an island. A typical documentary photo. Congratulations. Cumprimentos, Tolga

Hi Francisco,
Impressive view teaching a lot of geology. Colours of the rocks are special, and I think this is thanks to that better than B&W version submitted earlier.
Kari

Oi Francisco,
Obrigada,
MCV

Francisco,
the background of your post depicted in your note gives me a complete new perspective in understanding why the azores people migrated so heavily. The picture gives a good impression of that volcanic activity.
I saw similar in Lanzarote, although there the volcanic eruption was about 250 years ago and yet it seems to be yesterday. There was even a restaurant that grilled the chicken on the heat coming from the ground!
Peter

Belas cores.
