Photographer’s Note

Madeira, just like any other place, is a combination of many pieces making up a complex and unique puzzle. One of the pieces is Camara de Lobos, a port in a small creek, with a beach and a harbour and with the houses heaped up around the bay. The soul of the city is in the coastal area. Fishing, small trade, bananas and the wine exalted by Shakespear are this municipality's main resources, also immortalized by another Englishman, Churchill, who painted the view from the bay belvedere.

But it is by night that the spirit of this city comes to life, when its streets and bars by the harbour fill with people. Tourists, other Madeirans and locals mix, making the streets a big, exclusive bar. To enter, a Poncha or a Nikita are a good invitation card. These drinks are a must of the archipelago. Poncha is a cocktail of regional products, mixing the local brandy with honey and lemon or with passion fruit or orange. Nikita is smoother, mixing pineapple ice cream with beer, white wine and sugar. And for those who wish to venture out in the exploration of the world's rare drinks, there is still the "Pé de Cabra" (goat's foot), a mixture where stout and egg yolk is combined with Madeira wine and chocolate.
