Funchal (pronounced [fũˈʃaɫˤ]), population 100,526, is the capital of the Madeira Islands of Portugal.
Funchal is also the largest city on the islands and with its neighbouring boroughs has over 150,000 inhabitants.

Madeira's capital for more than five centuries, Funchal is said to have been named as such because of the abundance of fennel (funcho - in Portuguese) that was growing there.

On 1419 two captains of Prince Henry the Navigator, João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira, were driven by a storm to the island they named Porto Santo. They gave this name (meaning Holy Harbour) in gratitude for their rescue from shipwreck.
The next year an expedition was sent to populate the island, in which the two captains, together with captain Bartolomeu Perestrello, took possession of the islands on behalf of the Portuguese crown.
The islands started to be settled circa 1420 or 1425. In September 23, 1433, the name Ilha da Madeira (Madeira Island or "island of the wood") appears in a map, by the first time, in a document.

Funchal it was founded by João Gonçalves Zarco in 1421 and was elevated to city status by King Manuel I of Portugal in 1508.
In the 16th century Funchal was important as a stopping place between the Indies and the New World, and was known as a wealthy place. It was also the port for Madeiran sugar and wine.

Olá Paolo, superb foreground with the "Neptuno seis" almost coming out of my screen. Excellent interplay with the lighthouse seen in the distance over the rocky cliff. Lovely bright colors expressing the summer mood.
ciao,
ric

Hi Paolo,

George

Bonjour Paolo,

Silvio

Ciao Paolo

Fantastic colour contrasts between the red boat & blue sky, with good sharpness & contrast. The slight oe in the highlights doesn't bother me because the shadow detail on the text is more important. Bellisimo!

Hi Paolo,
I like the close perspective of the ships to emphasize their size and the throw in a big dose of colors. Well done and TFs. Gerald

Ciao Paolo,
una bella composizione, molto belle le barche in primo piano,
quello che mi affascina e magari vorrei vedere in un altra foto e' quel particolare faro sullo sfondo.
ottimo lavoro
Giorgio

Ciao Bello,
Ah I like those harbour scenes with so colorful little boats, a nice one with the small background lighthouse adding depth, so you added one mor eisland to your already quite long list I see...
A presto JY

Excellent compo and vivid colors. I like this mixture of red and blue...

Ciao Paolo,
Un bel ensemblent de couleurs agréable a voir, beau cadrage avec le bâteau pris en gros plan
Have a nice day for you

Hi Paolo. Very nice composition. Colors on the boats are great and definition too. Well done. Paulo

hello Paolo

Amazing color saturation without polarizer to get this strong contrast of boats, the rock and the sky. I like the FG boats in close up and showing good bokeh, and the white steps leading up the rocks in this composition.

A fine day to capture this tone and well chosen POV.

tfs, bill
