Bom Jesus

The baroque staircase - built on a wooded hillside - is a series of terraced white plastered zigzags. Each of the lower five levels is embellished with a wall fountain representing one of the five senses. Above these are more levels with fountains representing the three virtues.

Penitents would climb the steps on their knees, to reach the twin towered church at the top. The less holy, and the less energetic, can take the funicular which runs beside the staircase.

Granite rococo biblical figures grace the top levels.

This picture is taken looking out over these figures towards the city of Braga and the distant mountains.
