| It was not easy to take a decent picture with such odd weather conditions moments later we had arrived in Porto and left our luggage in a little hostel near Torre dos Clerigos ...At a first sight we found a derelicted city with long slopes , run-down old buildings about to tumble down that claimed aloud for restoration as if a WWar had blasted there little time ago ...But our perception changed once we went downhill to the Douro river flanks ...There was a special atmosphere , seagulls , an improvised orchestra playing music and performing for a bunch of tourists , the way this river gives sense to the city , the amount of nice bridges , wine cellars , boats and living colours washing the rivershore houses ...Cheap prices and the best Portuguese kindness . Just one thing , if you once try to find a restaurant to have lunch or diner in a Sunday evening it will be a difficult task specially in the old city . It all seemed closed ...Anyway there are fantastic places where to have a taste to the exaggerated sweet Oporto wines if staying by Vilanova de Gaia . It is a better choice if you opt by little canteens or bars and avoid some posh places scattered along the Ribera in which you are meant to pay even for the tacky decoration of the walls ...The only place that somehow disappointed me in Oporto was the Lello and irmaos bookshop...Stupid personal trying to force you to buy something and looking at you in a menacing way if you dare ask for the price of something , for any piece of information , if you hesitate about buying a book or just deny that possibility because prices are overly inflated even for common books ...Sao Bento station (decoration with superb tiles) , Cordoaria quartier , Barrio de la Se (Cathedral) and of course the Douro Ribeira are the most appealing spots IMHO there in Porto |
