This is the St. Roque channel in Aveiro, a city grown up at the biggest portuguese ria, the Aveiro Ria. A ria is normally a disproportionate big estuary for the size of the river, in this case the River Vouga, formed by the rising see level or sinking of the land, which causes the flooding of the valleys. This is a very friendly place with very friendly people, situated on the West coast in the Central Region, somewhere between Coimbra and Porto. Because some channels cross the city, some people don't resist the ridicule of callig it the "Venice of Portugal". But Aveiro has something. For me, it has above all this special and charming touch of a maritime city.
