Photographer's Note

One of the towers of the Silves castle.

The Moorish castle in Silves was in the 8th -13th centuries a mighty fortress which defended the Algarve region,
Following the re-conquest by Christian forces in 1242, Silves Castle was altered and renovated.
Today, Silves Castle is a great remnant. There are some remains of the buildings which were once housed within the walls of the castle, mostly in the form of excavated foundations. The big Cistern of Moura from these periods, massive, defensive walls and 11 towers and turrets also remain.
