"The Aqueduct of Alentejo town of Serpa is an unusual work of Portuguese engineering, given its unusual configuration and because it is a private enterprise. Indeed, the aqueduct was designed to serve, not a population or a convent any community, but only to meet the needs of private consumption of a house of Serpa - the Solar dos Condes de Ficalho, noble residence that is part of a cloth walls of the castle site.

The aqueduct was built at the end of the seventeenth century, under the sponsorship of D. Francisco de Melo, eminent figure of the local nobility, which became known for their participation in the wars of the Restoration.
This particular structure of water supply comes on the outskirts of the city, drawing a source of water that springs in a mountain next. Already at the end of his journey, the high pillars of the aqueduct, which support the arcades back perfect, based directly on the walls of the Castle of Serpa, forming an unusual and contrasting architectural structure. In this unusual collection is yet to highlight the huge floodgates Moorish which adds to the wall, serving also contraforte of the aqueduct itself."

The composition adds perspective to this photo and also I like the way the light "changes" the photo and it becomes a wonderful scenary.
