Photographer’s Note

- The Mediterranean Windmills type, group to which belongs the majority of of Portuguese windmills, as a particular form, distinct from north of Europe. Of less dimension, they are generally composed of a cylindrical structure built in rock, with a conical cupula made of wooden, and can have a changing number of sails made of rag whose origin can be found in the sailing ships.
- Windmills in the southwest litoral part of the country have a unique particularity, they are equipped with earthenware vessels at the surrounding tow of their wind-wheel. Consisting of porous pottery, were a very sensible measuring instrument for the miller.The sound, becoming different with increasing wind-speed and relative humidity variations in the air, was a warning before a storm or bad weather came up.
- This one in particular is located in Bordinheira, a small village located near Torres Vedras.
