Marvao is a municipality in Portugal with a total area of 154.9 km² and a total population of 3,739 inhabitants.
The municipality is composed of 4 parishes, and is located in the District of Portalegre. The municipal holiday is September 8.
Its name is derived from an ancient local Muslim chieftain, named Ibn Marwan

Located on a cliff of the Serra de São Mamede and only a few miles from Spain, this quiet town is surrounded by walls built between the XIII and XVII century. Their demarcated by narrow alleys and white houses graceful way it can get a spectacular view because Marvão is over 862 meters of altitude. It is worth visiting the Church of the fifteenth century, and the Municipal Museum, installed in the former church of Santa Maria and showing cultural and ethnological, archaeological sites and discoveries. Walking along the Street of the Holy Spirit, with the former governor's house exhibiting beautiful wrought iron balconies of the seventeenth century, comes to the castle, mostly built by King Dom Dinis in 1299 and overlooking the village.

Ibn Marwân (d. c. 889), was a Iberian Sufi Muladi whose family had come from northern Portugal and settled near Mérida.
In 868, leading a host of Muladin and Mozarabs, he rebelled against Emir Muhammad I of Córdoba and after a heroic resistance he got honourable surrendering terms from the Emir and was given Badajoz whom he started to fortify.
Knowing of an incoming attack by the Emirate forces, he fled northwards settling in the castle of Karkar (now Carquere, near Lamego, Portugal). Afterwards, at Ibn Marwân's request, king Alfonso III of León sent him auxiliary troops and the combined army defeated the Emirate forces. Returning to Badajoz, now a well fortified city, he established his rule throughout the whole of the Al'Garb Al'Andalus.
Between 876 and 877 he also erected the Castle of Marvão, in Portugal, a place already known in the 10th century as Amaia de Ibn Maruán or Fortaleza de Amaia.
His dynasty lasted until 930.
