[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
It's time I post something from the town where I was born and spent my teenage years. I hadn't anything worth to post until the day I shot this one, when I decided to take my chance and see if I got anything decent to post.

Portalegre is a small town of 15000 inhabitants, perched on a slope overlooking the vast expanse of hilly plains that constitutes the Northernmost part of Alentejo. Although there are plenty of serras (literally mountains, but considering their relatively low height, I guess that in many other places of the world they would be called just hills) in Alentejo, having the highest mountain of of Portugal South of the Tejo (Tagus in English, Tajo in Spanish) just beside the town makes it a region a little bit different from much of the rest of Alentejo. Actually Alentejo spreads itself further North, behind the mountains, but from many parts of town, one has the feeling of being on the top of a huge balcony overlooking the plains. Photo wise, it's a pity that the "balcony" is oriented Southwards, which makes difficult to get good panoramic views because the sun is always in front of the POV.

Even more than in other areas of the Portuguese interior, the region suffers much with the loss of population, which looks to me like a vicious circle: less people, less economic activity, less jobs, so many people like myself end up never returning back even if they really wanted so, which isn't my case, as I still feel it a place a bit claustrophobic to live everyday.

This place isn't part of my memories, because until recently it was closed to the public. Actually it was a surprise discovering this little alley embedded between two city walls which I guess were built as early as the 14th century. I knew well the street that lies on the left, some 5 meters below, which has houses only on the left side, because the right part is a second line of city walls, like the one we see on the right of the image. I guess that people lived on those houses, but since the street was closed, I always thought that they made part of a big property with a big garden inside it.

I posted two alternative POV's with different PP, namely on the colour balance, as WS's [1, 2].

ricardo

Ola Jose! Very interesting architecture. Nice lightness and brightness. Good POV and capture. Original picture. Saude!

Nice perspective! I like the angle of lighting here, really brings out that beautiful building.
Best wishes,
Achim

Nice composition. light and colours are great.
greetings,

figen

Hello José,

Very simple but very beautiful. I like especially the game of shade and light and the white which arise very well in the blue sky.
Amizades,
Roger

F

The cooler white balance of the main post has given you better whites than those of the warmer white balance used for the WSs. Compare the clouds rather than the buildings. It can be difficult to get it right as many people prefer warmer looking images. I struggle to make up my mind. Interesting that you lived in this town for most of your early life and you still find something surprising. This is my preferred framing; I think the tree is perfectly placed. Another good all-round presentation from you.

Realça bem a arquitectura simples do Alentejo.

Ola Jose
Linda esta foto !
Magnificas cores e uma definicao excelente. Bom manuseamento da luz
Um grande abraço

Olà José
Between the main post and the version 2, I could not decide which one I do prefer...on the main one I like the shade line creating a graphical impact and also working well in the prolongation with the house behind. On the 2nd version, I do like better the pov, but it's personal...
Cheers from Goa

Jean-Charles

Não percebo bem. A área estava fechada porquê?

Hi Jose,
Catching a shot of the place you spent your teenage must a thing of a lot of emotion. This is a great catch....the framing has been wonderful.
Regards,
Sagarneel.

Bonito trabalho. Abraço, Consuelo

Hello Jose,

A nice place and I like to see they found place for the green tree in the midst of all the stone and concrete!
The image is well composed, with fine details and an interesting shadow play producing clear cut lines...

Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Stego,
The wall look very new in white color and the trees are still young, good sharpness and nice color, thanks for sharing a peaceful corner from your hometown.
Ally

Olá José,
what I like in this one are the good white wall (wonderful texture) and the diagonal lines in different directions (shadow, roof, ground) which gives puzzling effect. Good light and clarity.
Lieben Gruss, Ulf

Hello Jose. I like the simplicity of this shot. The tree with beautiful canopy sits right on the sweet spot. The light and shadow crossing the frame making this stunning against the beautiful sky. Thanks for sharing and best regards. Jusni
