Photographer’s Note
Tomar is famous mainly for its fantastic Templar Castle. However I wasn’t going to visit it until I have seen in the DK guidebook (lonely planet and plenty of other guides show just artistic images which have no informative value at all) a photo similar to this presented here. When I saw this square I knew I have to visit this town.
It is a very good example of the interesting pavement, the issue which I have mentioned before. Pavements in Portugal, especially on important town squares, have always unique pattern which makes it really attractive and different. I have never seen such a variety of pavement patterns before.
Tomar was founded as headquarters of the Knights Templar in Portugal in the 12th century and contains some of the most significant Templar monuments in Europe. Tomar was especially important in the 15th century when it was a centre of Portuguese overseas expansion under Henry the Navigator, the Grand Master of the Order of Christ, successor organization to the Templars in Portugal.
Church of Saint John the Baptist (São João Baptista): The main church of Tomar is located in the main square of the town, in front of the Municipality (17th century) and a modern statue of Gualdim Pais. The church was built between the 15th and 16th centuries and has many interesting artistic details, like the flamboyant Gothic portal, the Manueline tower with a 16th century clock, the decorated capitals of the inner columns of the nave and several panels painted in the 1530s by one of Portugal's best Renaissance artists, Gregório Lopes.

Good morning Mariusz!
This pavement really creates an amazing effect and it's a not to surpass contrast to the old buildings around. An interesting - and stunning photo from an advantageous angle.

A simple view made interesting by the pov that you have chosen, and by the use of the wide angle lens, which makes the patternon the floor very graphycal and hypnotic.
very nice work

Gratuluje! Bardzo ladne zdjecie!
Pozdrawiam,

Hello Mariusz,
I think you're right about the pavements in Portugal. Here on TE we find lots of pictures taken in different places in the country that show very interesting patterns in the pavements.
The strange thing is that when I visited Portugal 24 years ago I didn't notice that. I cannot imagine that I was that little attentive. So the Portuguese must have started later with these magnificent pavements.
You've taken the picture of this square from the right angle.
The alternating white and black stones of the square contrast strong with the blue sky in which we cannot find the smallest cloud.
Best regards, Paul

hi, Mariusz,
good wide and low angle shot! i like you "burn" the sky, so that the "blue" looks darker and sharp; also it creates contrast between this interesting ground and buildings. nice job!

Hello Mariusz,
I like the idea of this composition using the pattern on the ground to put a visual interest as well as driving the look in deepness inside the place.
The tiny people in background increase this feeling.
Yves.

Mocne kolory i kontrasty, kompozycja i efekty UWA - nie z tego świata!
Obłędne zdjęcie!

czesc Mariusz,
musze przyznac ze ten plac robi naprawde duze wrazenie, takze chetnie dolaczam do gratulacji. Swietnie pokazane szerokim katem, ech sam musze chyba wreszcie zainwestowac w cos szerokiego! NIe ma to jak przedstawienie rzeczywistosci w taki wlasnie sposob. Interesujace miejsce, swietne swiatlo i znakomicie spolaryzowane niebo, a do tego naturalne kolorki. Gratki.

Hello Mariusz,
I cannot resist the attraction which this checkerwork exerts, which ends up tiring the glance, because it unceasingly makes move the eyes. The light, the colors, clearness, the composition, all is a great success. A very deserved success. Congratulations.
Have a nice day.

Hi, Mariusz. The geometrical patterns of the square pavement give a nice graphic aspect to your foreground, enhanced by the wide angle. The white buildings with their red roofs stand out very well against the deep blue sky. Very good colours and light management.
Have a nice evening,
Philippe
