Photographer’s Note
What aou see is the only place on the island of Madeira where swimming in the sea is save and recommended. It is a part of Porto Muniz at the western end of Madeira and the view is from a lookoutpoint besides the road that leads in serpentines steep up to the south coast road.
The pool is man made but fed by the Atlantic Ocean waves which break into it. Madeira soesn't offer a single natural beach of protected bay. Vertical cliffs
with small strips of cultivated land between sea and rocks and deep, green valleys are typical. In order to get from one village to the next you either have to climb or use one of the many tunnels that were build since Portugals roads are funded by the EC.
A local told me that Madeira today has more new tunnel - road KMs than Switzerland. I can't proof that but he might be right.
