Who visited Lisbon and does not know the famous "Pasteis de Belem" pastries ?!

Here is the "Antiga Confeitaria de Belem" next to the "Mosteiro dos Jeronimos" (the Hieronymite Monastery) and not far away from the "Torre de Belem".

As a result of the liberal revolution of 1820, all convents and monasteries in Portugal were shut down in 1834, the clergy and labourers expelled.

To survive, someone from the monastery offered sweet pastries for sale in the shop; pastries that rapidly became known as "Pasteis de Belém".
The receipe is still kept secret.

If you want to eat some pasteis de nata (small cream cakes), the ones from Belem are the best ones.
Of course you can find also some good pastries in Lisbon, but these ones have a particular taste ;)

It is a kind of "flan", and you can add cinnamon on top of it.

In the famous bakery on the photo, they do themselves the pasteis and you can eat them on place, still hot from the furnace.
Mmmmm, delicious !

At the entrance, you can buy several pastries to take away, for yourself or to offer.
Inside, you have big rooms to seat and eat.
If you come during the week-end, you will have to queue.
