It's the ceiling of the Chapel of the Bones, in Évora. There are two in Portugal, as far as I know, one here and one in Faro, in the Algarve. Integrated in the Church of São Francisco, it was built in the 16th and 17th centuries with the bones taken from the graves of many monasteries that existed in the region. It follows the idea of some monks who wanted a place for meditation and to show how short life is. Believe me, they succeeded. When we get to the door, we see an inscription above saying:We, the bones here, keep waiting for yours. Then, we get in and we find a chapel with the walls covered with thousands of bones. Everything reminds death here. The photo I'm posting is from the paintings that we find on the ceiling, also connected with death.
Now, I've already turned it and you can see it right because before it was turned upside down. This is the vision you have if you look up at the ceiling when you are in the middle of the chapel. |

Hello Ana, this one works a little better I think. It's benefitted from a rotation. I gather that it was correct initially from the point that your were standing and looking up, but this way it's presented better. Good detail, nice and clear.

Hi Anabela
Very interesting view. I think that zombie subject was in fashion even so many centuries ago. Yes, the old 'memento mori' used to be reminded at every corner of the world.
cheers

Hi Ana,
So there are two churches in Portugal with bones... It's rather macabre but the overload also has some strange beauty to it -- do you have pics from the inside of the church other thanm this ceiling pic?
Thanks,
Raluca
