Whenever a guitar warbles
In the hands of a fine player,
The guitar alone teaches
Every soul how to sing

This is a poor translation of the first verse of "Guitarra" from the acclaimed Portuguese folk group Madredeus. And you can’t imagine how that can be true in Alfama. We were strolling around the cobblestone streets of the old quarter but as I listened to the pure but strong voice of the little boy you can see here through the giant earring of the place’s owner I felt immediately compelled to stop, listen and to enter this small restaurant (*). Nothing can be more passionate than Fado and listen to it in the streets of Alfama is the closest experience you can get to swim in a Portuguese soul. Fado (translated literally as destiny or fate) is characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor; or in other words, about what means to be a Portuguese. Ah! Saudade…

(*) The restaurant is Porta D'Alfama (Rua S. João da Praça, 17 A). I am in no way affiliated with the place but I am mentioning it because this place has Fado every Saturday from 15 to 20h. It's not easy to hear the music during the day so save this tip for your Lisbon visit.

Very true statement about a guitar, Luis!
And a very rich interraction between faces
in your b/w frame, today.
Very loud, very melodic.
Thank you,
Robi

Hi Luis,
A nice atmosphere ! ... I'm listening music, composition and details is very good.well done
Ciao
Andrea

Hi Luis Afonso,
What a pleasant surprise, after a long day, to receive this gift from you!
I like a lot this presentation, and enjoy it as the participants in the image.
It's very good the way each person is doing their own stuff, playing the guitar, lughing, or having that deep stare, as the one on the little boy.
Love all the range grey tones got here, including also the whites and the blacks.
The two women in the first plane makes like a perfect frame for the scene, so bautifully blurred by the DOF.
I don't know why, but like very much the earring over the boy, it's like a kind of aura or crown of angels.
I'm really thankful to you for share this picture.
My compliments and best regards,
JM

Hi Luis.
A great shot, your translation of these words are wonderfull, because i think it in spanish and it sounds very well:
cuando suena una guitarra
en manos de un buen guitarrista
la guitarra sola enseña
a todas las almas cantar.
I like very much this work on B&W, your POV is excelent, and it have been well used to frame the main motive between these too bodyes. That photo could be made in spain because is so similar that a player from here. Congratulations for this nice picture.
Angel.

merhaba dear luis
beautiful black white,daily life picture.
best regards.

I almost love this photo, dear Luis. I so much want to love this photo... There is so many things that I could love here. The guitar and the player, the people all around, the place itself with the tables and the tablecloth and the wall with the so typical ceramic tiles... But most of all: the eyes of the little boy. The sparkling eyes of the little boy. Just an incredible light in those eyes! ... And that's where I find fault to your photo and prevent me to really fall in love with it. That ring!!! Gosh! I hate it! As much as I would like to love that photo, I just see that ring that keeps to be right there between him and me...
Almost...
Claire

Luis,

Superb shot! You have captured the mood and the atmosphere so well. The B&W works very well. The tones...grey to black to white are fantastic.

Congrats!

Cheers,
Guru

Have you already made your mind what you want to be? A landscape photographer or a street photographer? In the beginning i had no doubt, for sure a landscape photographer, but seeing this one, and also your previous one, i am not sure anymore. The eye that you have for landscapes (and believe me you have a good eye) is also in development in these kind of work. You are a very fast learner my friend. You know how and where to look, especially on these kind of compositions.
And not only the photography, but using the digital tools from today's homelab is something you become better and better. This conversion is excellent, bright whites and deep black, just as the word.....B&W..!!!
Not a picture i would make, but i can see if it's a good one yes or no...and this a very good one..!!!
Regards, Henk

i hope one day i'll join you for the trip around alfama...some three months ago i missed mariza show in warszawa, upsetting thing...
----
interesting how you framed the scene in a natural way using the listener's arms...
best wishes, j.

Hi Luis,
I was gonna say somethin like "so typically portuguese", but then I realised that the guitar player has a little something of Elvis.
The photo is great with this silouhettes guiding the eye and all these eyes in the photo, looking at each others. Only this big earring half way across the eye of the kid disturbs me, but I'm being picky (The photo wouldn't as good without the earring anyway)
Well done!
Nicolas

The best comment on this great photo is to be found in Luís's answer to Claire... how the ring (my favorite element in the picture) places a Fado-esque tear in the corner of the boy's eye...

The ring makes a mysterious halo that focuses us on that part of the image...and the other characters also looking at the boy...

There is an element of Fate in photography, something that decides how expressions get registered on the photo... and this photo is very evocative of that because of these delightful coincidences. Great shot!

Estou contigo e gosto do pormenor do brinco...e lágrima.
Ricardo

A nice perspective Luis, including the crowd makes us feel involved with the music, and you've also kept the photo busy with the many faces and expressions being shown.

Admit it Luis, this is just a scan of one of Gageiro's photos!
I can't imagine getting a better shot if you placed everyone exactly where you wanted and told them how to look and then said, one, two, three... click. The framing of the guitar between the listeners is perfect. I like how it creates a nice black area directly surrounding the lighter guitar. Interesting about the crystal teardrop too. I usually like high contrast, but for some reason I find myself wishing this had softer contrast. Maybe some gray would be more fitting for the subject matter. I'm just not thrilled about the washed out highlights here (especially on the woman on the left), but probably there was nothing you could have done in this difficult lighting situation.
Truly amazing photo. I wish I could have gone shooting with you guys instead of flying home.
P.S. Your photo of the Ursa sunset on Olhares… very nice! So is Adraga IV, and V, and Ribeira da Janela III.

Hi Luis,

I like how you’ve created this nice and cozy atmosphere by using two of your subjects to frame the musician. Your black and white adaptation is very beautiful with good grey tones and contrasts. AM

Thanks Luis for steering me to this beautiful piece of music. And your fabulous shot compliments it perfectly. The music is very haunting as is the expression on the young boys face. The woman by the window is an image of pure delight. The icing on the cake - the ring! Best regards, Roberto

Bella prospettiva Luis,
hai catturato i volti e l'atmosfera in maniera superba
bravo
Giorgio

I really like your recent street photography. All of them give me a feeling of being part of the scenes, not just a tourist behind a long lens. This one even more so, due to the close out of focus faces, and the singer looking at me it is just like sitting in that crowded little restaurant myself, or at least as close as it gets without traveling to Lisboa.

Olá, Luis.

Boa foto.

Luis,

The tear, if intended, of the boy created by the earing is nothing sort of genius. But as I say, only if you 'created' this before pressing the shutter.

Technically and compositionally it is very good, I like the framing

Boa foto, ainda assim.

You know Luis, if you had ever managed to put his two eyes within the circle of her ear rings, it would have been something like a performance from Maciek's photographical flying circus. Something like Michael Jordan dunking the ball way up from the shooting line (I say Jordan because you're probably too young to know Julius "Dr.J" Erving, who was a real player and whom people said they saw him flying on Philadelphia basket grounds), a life time achievement like Kasparov on top of the chess world, spanking Karpov and after then silicon valley represented by Big Blue.. but no, you prefered to stay within the human field, and leave these eyes out of the circle.

Hence that's almost a family photo, it could be on the immediate aftermath of cousin Luis, Mario, Rui or whoever's wedding... minutes after 90% of the guests have left and there's noone else but close friends. Someone grabs a guitar and sings : simple as that.

Nothing like a restaurant atmosphere, smiles and friendly eye contacts say it's home... and beautifully framed too.

Magnificent "tunnel shot" Luis, framng the woman singer in the middle of an afternoon Fado. This is fine photography my friend, proof once again that you are extremely versatile.
Top notch work,
Francis

Hi Luis,

So many nice and well-deserved comments about your shot. What can I say to put my own bit...

Well, my first impression; I really feel the potuguese ambiance here, with ceramic tiles, the checked tablecloth and of course, the guitarist. So for this restitution alone, it’s worth the interest.

Than there’s your strong and clever point of view, with the two girls that frame the musician, creating an intimate scene and making us part of the event. So far, so good.

But as some members have already mentionned, the earring could have been a terrific detail if it would have encircled the young boy’s eyes. But because it didn’t happen doesn’t mean that the image have less merit! This shot is about feeling, reunion, roots.

Like a lot of your photos, the Emotional Coefficient™ often play a big role. And that’s also what draws people like me to it. That’s what is really important.

Regards,

CLICK... "

:D

Hi Luis, a superb wide angle shot, very nicely done by closing on both sides, taken at the right time, superb...

Hi Luis,
very good how you have framed the musician with the two spectators.
The boy's glance is interesting as well because he seems very intrigued with something.
I can hear the music, nice song :)
