Photographer’s Note
The Convent of Jesus is one of main monuments of the city of Setúbal, considered as a maximum exponent of the manuelino period and great importance for the History of the Art in Portugal. Its construction, in lands yielded to the Crown for a particular one, was authorized the 15 of June of 1489, having been concluded six years later, in 1496. Residence of nuns of a branch of the franciscana Order until the o year of 1888, the Convent of Jesus also lodged the Hospital of the Espirito Santo, that functioned under administration of the Casa Saint of the Mercy until the o year of 1959 there, dates where the District Hospital of Setúbal was inaugurated. The Church of the Convent of Jesus, projectada for great arquitecto Boitaca and considered as a jewel of the Portuguese architecture, assays the especificidades of the followed manuelina architecture, particularly, in the Monastery of the Jerónimos, Lisbon.
