Photographer's Note

Northen part of Romania, especially Maramures County is known as the Wood country. For centuries, people from here made a culture out of wood. Houses, objects for regulary use or for religious use were skillfuly handcrafted by talented woodworkers; they imprinted their work with artistical shapes and models, some of them very ancient. Among the most impressive artworks you can find in the villages of this area are the woodchurches, one or tho in a village, some of them having several centuries of existence. Most of these churches are integrated in the UNESCO mondial patrimony for preservation.

The church in the picture is from Calinesti village (one of the two existing here), and I met inside here two local painters, busy with repairing the old paintings from inside.
