Photographer’s Note

This is a view from the castle walls of San Marino, capital of the "Serenissima Repubblica di San Marino", an independant state completely enclosed within Italy and situated on steep hills near Rimini. Its status can be compared to Monaco with France, or Liechtenstein with Switzerland. Far below the castle you see Italy up to the Adriatic sea in the background.

The republic was founded on 3 september 301 by Marino, who had to leave Rimini where Christians were persecuted and built a small church on the Monte Titano. Through time it managed to preserve its independance from Italy. Now it is member of the UN and the council of Europe, but not of the European Union, it can use Euro though and even produce rare San Marino Euro coins.
