Photographer’s Note

Just like in so many other eastern European capitals that were "liberated" by the Red Army, the new Soviet rulers immediately built monuments to themselves. Bratislava is no different although it took a couple of years for construction of the Slavin-monument to get under way. The actual monument was built between 1957 and 1960. The 39m high pylon is topped by an 11m high statue. The monument is surrounded by a cemetery which is the last resting place of 6,845 Soviet soldiers who fell while liberating Bratislava.
