Photographer’s Note

It´s spring...almost summer...a time to post a late autumn photo... :-)

The ever more popular place for weekend walks, cloister of St. Catherine (locally called Katarínka) in woods between Naháč and Dechtice villages has been a spectator of WW2 fights during retreat of German army, pushed by the Red army. Memories of the war are carved in the walls by bullets.

The woods around this cloister were used as a hideout for Nahac men when the fronts marched through the village.

The cloister is being conserved by volunteers each summer. Progress of their work, as well as facts and history of the place can be seen on several posters in surrounding area.

Close to the ruins led a narrow-track railway transporting timber from the woods. The railway system spread almost across the whole small carpathians, nowadays only a signs of it can be sensed. A 50m track and a few wagons have been restored nearby the cloister. If you have luck in the summer, you might have a chance for a ride.

Last year roadsigns appeared by the roads around Katarínka, so if you are in this area, you can´t miss it.
