Where Princes Go When They Die Photo

Photographer’s Note

Bled has, in my opinion, all the necessary components of a fairy tale setting. Sitting by the lakeside under an old tree, with a view of a castle perched precariously on a cliff, watching the swans glide by, a strange thought entered my head: this must be the place where princes and princesses go when they die; this must be the fulfillment of those well-worn words, "and they lived happily ever after."

The selective desaturation was intended to represent this dreamy, fantasy-like feeling. It is a world of black and white, with only certain details like the texture of moss and shrubs, or the red roofs of the castle in subdued colour. It's like a fairy tale from deep within your subconscious - you have to fill in the rest of the colours yourself using your own imagination.

Hi, Jordan,

Well, you have achieved a dreamy ephemeral quality with this image.

The composition is very strong, with the castle on the hill perfectly framed by the branches of the old, strong tree. I like also all of the details we see in the lower left of the frame: the benches with the interesting pattern of light and shade, the graceful swan in the distance, and the gently rippled reflection of the distant castle. The sky and the detailed fine branch structure at the top also add nicely to the overall richness of the photo.
