Photographer’s Note

Third photo: a well and an abandoned barn on the outskirts of the village. Or was the barn abandoned? It looked quite ramshackle, seemed like it would get completely soaked inside if it were to rain, the windows were busted out, and yet it was locked up and I could see equipment stored inside. I was tempted to try to go inside and explore, but in the end I didn't: if it really were abandoned, it probably wouldn't be safe to do so; and if it were actually not abandoned, well then, I would have commited a break and enter (and being alone and not speaking a word of Slovene, that was to be avoided at all costs). =( Well, I guess I'll enjoy it from the outside then.

This is part of a four-photo series about Crngrob ("Black Grave"), a small village in the Upper Carniolan countryside with a population of 33. More specifically, I should say a four-photo series about the dirt path leading from Škofja Loka to Crngrob. The path is not particularly long and not breathtakingly spectacular, but it was beautiful that one spring day in its subtleties: the texture of the spring mud, the gentle bends through forests and fields, the overwhelming smell of wildflowers in the wooded grove, the Alps off in the distance... Slovenia has enough massive dramatic breathtaking sites to make any tourist's head spin (I think I stumbled around in a state of shock for a couple hours after the Škocjan Caves haha; not mentally prepared for something that unreal), so it was nice to take a day off to just relax, breathe, have a picnic and appreciate Slovenia's finer details.
