El Joyazo, a massive crater near to the village of Nijar, Almeria, Spain. It is around 5 million years old and is predominantly made of dacite, with enormous reef sections preserved on the upper margins (where the photo is taken from, a good few 100 feet above the crater floor), indicating the staggering changes in sea level which occurred in this part of geologic time. The crater is famous for it's garnets which are strewn around the crater floor (collecting can consequently take up a good few days of your life!).
In the centre of the shot is the main "saddle" into and out of the crater, to the left of this is a smaller baranco, and in the lower central part of the photo is a dacite feeder dyke. Slag heaps of crushed dacite and garnet are the darker grey portions of the crater floor.
This photo was taken directly into the afternoon sun and so is slightly over-exposed, but i kinda like this look of this photo, it looks quite eerie. |
