The immage shows where the Mediterranean and the Atlantic waters meet in TARIFA.
Tarifa is a small town on the southernmost coast of Spain and of the European continent, opposite the coast of Morocco, just 11 km across the Straits of Gibraltar at its narrowest point, this southern-most tip of Europe where the Mediterranean and the Atlantic waters meet, enjoys with good weather views of the Rif mountains of Africa, its name is derived from the Berber fighter Tarif ibn Malik. Tarifa is sometimes credited with being the origin of the word, tariff, since it was the first port in history to charge merchants for the use of its docks. There are regular ferries between Tarifa and the nearby Moroccan city, Tangier - from europe to africa in 35 min. It was the first point of the Moorish invasion of Southern Spain in AD711. Tarifa became an important city back in the 10th century, under the rule of Abd-al-Rahman III, when the caliph castle that we find in the historic quarter was built. The influence of the Arab period can be seen in the present appearance of the city, with narrow, winding streets. In 1295 Guzman El Bueno, the local hero, savior of the town defended the town against the invading Moors. According to the local legend, the Moors captured his son and threatened to kill him if Guzman didn't surrender the town. He refused and threw down his sword with which they killed his son. Tarifa has transformed from a strategic military fortress to a remote fishing town, and today tourism flourishes in this melting pot of cultures.
Every population which either settled or passed by has left its imprint. This is evident from the traces of ancient Rome to the modern windsurfing culture although Tarifa's Moorish style is still predominant with its medina (old city centre).
The town has many attractive buildings and scenic spots, influenced by the Spanish and Moroccan culture and it is known to be the “Mecca” for kite/windsurfing
