Photographer's Note

This picture was taken in the cloister of the Monastery of La Rabida, located in Palos de la Frontera, a tiny port of the Atlantic coast of Andalusia, (Huelva province).
In 1490, Christopher Columbus arrived to this monastery. He felt frustrated after the Portugal King refusal to support his project and in this place he was convinced by the monks, particularly by Juan Perez de Marchena, to present his project of arriving to China through the West to the The Catholic Monarchs, Isabella of Castillian and Ferdinand of Aragon. Finally Columbus project was accepted and in August 3rd of 1492 the expedition started the voyage opening to Europe The New World. Beside the monastery there is a museum with the reply of the three ships of this fisrt voyage.
