I shot this picture in ‘El Torcal de Antequera’ nature reserve (an area of about 17 sq.km.) in the Sierra del Torcal mountain range located south of the city of Antequera in the province of Málaga in Andalucia. The range lies between the cities Antequera and Málaga.
One of Europe’s most impressive karst landscapes is of Jurassic age limestone (about 150 million years old) sculpted by nature over time into the forms we see today, originally laid down in a marine corridor that extended from the Gulf of Cadiz to Alicante between the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean. The sea beds were lifted up to over 1300m during the Tertiary era, resulting in a modest mountain range of flat-lying limestone, which is rare in Andalucia. Later erosion exploited a series of fractures, cracks and faults to produce alleys & terraces of large blocks of limestone, which in turn have been subjected to both dissolution by water (karstification) and freeze-thaw splitting action resulting in the various shapes visible today.
Many of these forms resemble everyday objects and have so been named e.g. the Sphinx, the Jug, the Camel, the Screw, etc.
The Torcal also includes caves and other underground forms, some of them of historical importance like the Cueva del Toro (Cave of the Bull) with its Neolithic artifacts. These caves were formed likewise by the dissolution of underground limestone by rainwater.
The reserve is easily accessible by road, only an hour or so from Málaga (45mins from Antequera) and well worth the visit as it offers not only the amazing geology but some splendid views also.

Hi Damon, nice picture, it's a bit of harsh contrast between dark & light, but the very clear and sharp trees really works.
Cheers, Herman
Hello Damon,
I'm always amazed that so very few seem to have heard of this place, it is indeed, amazing, and you found a particularly graphic composition here. Very nice.
Regards
colin
Very good Dammon, and no WS, makes it even better. Looks like a rugged place. POV was great with thetree and overhang. I think the shadow along the rock formation works well. Rodney

Hi Damon,
well composed this picture with the tree well standing against the blue sky and well positioned in the frame. You managed to get good details throughout and beautiful vivid colours.
Well done!
