The heart of Nerja is its spectacular Balcón de Europa, the "Balcony of Europe", a magnificent promenade along the edge of a towering cliff, once the site of the great Moorish castle, with sweeping panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the small coves and beaches below, against an awesome backdrop of hazy blue mountains.
Nerja is where the mountains of the Sierra Almijara come down and meet the sea. It is a Spanish town, not a 'tourist' town, in a spectacular setting between the foothills of the mountains and the sparkling Mediterranean. A place where clear fresh mountain water flows in abundance, making the village a paradise of trees, flowers and colour, all year round. It lies in one of Spain's richest farming areas; abundant with fruit, vegetables and Burriana Beachflowers; this is known as the 'Garden of Europe". |
