Photographer's Note

Another photograph from the old city of Ciutadella in eastern Menorca and taken just a few hundred metres from my last one.

Walking through the tree lined Plaça dels Pins, I spotted this elderly gentleman sitting alone on a park bench, hardly moving and just staring into the distance. He looked quite sad and lonely and I wondered quite what was on his mind. Perhaps he had recently lost a loved one or lifelong companion, perhaps he was dreaming of past times and happier days or, perhaps, he was just enjoying some peace and quiet sitting here in the shade of a tree.

And I wondered what sort of life he had had. Judging by his large, gnarled and red hands, I suspect his work had been one of hard manual labour. And now his frayed collar and the crutch lying across his knees suggested increasing infirmity. But how much can one judge from first appearances?
