Photographer’s Note

This is an alley of the Old Town of Stockholm called Yxsmedsgränd (Axesmith Alley). The alley is stretching between the Västerlånggatan and Munkbron. It is mentioned already in 1612 and the name Yskemes grenden and has had various names since then. It got its present name in 1885. The alley is mentioned in the in Sweden well-known 18th century poet and composer Carl Michael Bellman’s Epistles of Fredman, In epistle number 28 there is a line "I går såg jag ditt barn, min Fröja, I Yxsmeds gränd" (translated into English :Yesterday I saw your child, my Froja, in the Axsmith Alley). It refers to Ulla Winblad one of the characters in many Bellman’s works. In real life Ulla Winblad was Maria Kristina Kiellström that lived in the alley.
