Gamla stan is the old town of Stockholm. It consists mainly of the island Stadsholmen, but also covers Riddarholmen and Helgeandsholmen. Gamla stan is also referred to as the "town between the bridges".
The town dates back to the 13th century, and consists of medieval alleyways, cobbled streets, and archaic architecture. North German architecture has had a strong influence in the Old Town's construction.
Stortorget is the name of the scenic large square in the centre of Gamla Stan, which is surrounded by old merchant's houses including the Stockholm Stock Exchange Building. The square was the site of the Stockholm Bloodbath, where Swedish noblemen were massacred by the Danish King Christian II, on November 7, 1520. The following revolt and civil war led to the dissolution of the Kalmar Union and the subsequent election of King Gustav I of Sweden.
A statue of St. George and the Dragon (sculpted by Bernt Notke) can be found in the Stockholm Cathedral, while Riddarholmskyrkan is the royal burial church.

Very colourful! I like this red-blue-yellow combination. It seems that this part of the city has narrow streets where cars would just fit.
Since the sky is not overcast I would expect some sun shining at least on one wall, but I can't see it.

A very colourful image, with a good perspective along the narrow street. There are some nice small details to catch the viewer's eye, the row of candle/gas lights on the right side (low down) for example. Great shot!

Another great shot from Sweden, George. This one is well composed and full of colour, and the line of the road draws our eyes into the scene.

Hi george,
I will travel to Stockholm next week end (12 august) and I think I've made a good choice when I see your picture. The city seems very colourfoul. I like the sign of the restaurant and the impressive reflections of sky in the windows. The calm atmosphere is strenghten by the little number of people in the framing.

Hi George - very charming street, I bet those brightly coloured façades help overcome the gloomy dark days of winter, a trip to the state monopoly bottle shop also helps.

Very nice view of Gamla Stan, with beautifull colors, especially for the cloudy sky. The compostion is good, the pciture is sharp. The ironwork shop sign is a nice bonus.

Nice capture, George, it looks like you have brought this saturated mustard yellow colour with you from Eastern Europe to Scandinavia, or at least that your camera is used to find a lot of it:) Any way, here it contrasts nicely with the blue sky and I like your composition and wide angle. Your urban shots are a pleasure to look at!

Excellent shot with rich colours…the sky is superb & the yellow of the buildings contrast well. Excellent POV to lead us along the curve of the street & particularly interesting is the cast iron signage.
