Photographer’s Note

It may be November, but not all is grey and dull at this time of year! Here’s a shot I took last week while on a walk between Twann and Ligerz, two wine-producing villages along the Bielersee.

The steep, south facing terraces are well suited to the cultivation of vines, and 20 types of grape are grown in this area. The principal harvests are Chasselas (55%) and Pinot Noir (34%), with the remainder comprising grapes such as Müller-Thurgau, Sylvaner, Pinot Gris, Gerwürztraminer, Chardonnay, Freisamer and Sauvignon Blanc. Each vine of course has its characteristic leaves and matures at a different stage, giving rise to the beautiful red and gold landscape at this time of the year.

This was a tricky shot to expose, and the use of an ND grad was not enough to balance the brightness of the sky. I further tried to pull back the sky and lake by using the RAW file to save two differently exposed versions and combining using the HDR method. This is my first attempt at HDR and any comments are welcome!
