Photographer’s Note

If this picture more a humourous side of the escalade event at Geneva, this one is more serious one :)

Taken last sunday, 9th december, during the commemoration of Escalade. For the people of Geneva the Escalade is the symbol of their independence. The escalade (literally : « scaling the walls ») marks the final attempt in a series of assaults mounted throughout the 16th century by Savoy which wanted to annex Geneva as its capital north of the Alps.

Every year the commemoration of the victory of the Genevans on invading Savoyan troops takes place at old town and schools. For this year the event take place last week end. The history can be found here[click].

It was showering, rain pouring almost the whole day. But didn't prevent people to come and see this one of the biggest event in Geneva. The dark clouds, rain, and getting darker towards the evening forced me to use ISO ranging from 640 - 3200. More pictures can be found here . The photos at the last pages in that website, taken using ISO 3200. luckily the noise is ok :)

Hi Cessy, nicely balanced shot and love how all these vertical lines are splitting up the scene, while the main character is so sharply in focus. The wide collar, the fantastic beard and the light reflecting off his chest armor are all nice touches.

Beautiful shot. Good decision to use a wide open aperture here. The face of the old man really stands out.

Amazing picture. Travel trough time.....Good choice of black and white. Well framed and i personally like high iso, the grain is nice and gives texture to the out of focus part of the image.

Hello Cessy,

Si je ne savais pas que cette image provenait de l'escalade je te demanderais comment tu as fait pour revenir dans le passé et prendre cette prise de vue qui est criante de vérité ! L'allure de cet halbardier est impressionnante ! Le grain est excellent dans cette image noir et blanc avec une profondeur de champ idéal !

This is a great photo Cessy. It looks a still from a movie. Like one of those round table movies from the 50s. Light is intense and the vertical spires are great elements in your photo. One of the best I've seen lately in this site.

tout simplement superbe, le traitement noir et blanc est parfait et convient parfaitement a ce genre d'image, l'inteligent bokeh permet de bien mettre en evidence ce personnage pour le moins typique.

this event must be really an interesting one with all this commemoration of Escalade.The B/W format helps to seem more realistic this shot with the dress warrior to be so serious and i think ready for the battle.Informative your note too.

A most delightful bw work cessy - like some take from a teather stage. The focus on the front figur and use of dof to the back is well considered and then the light and contrast is sure working to the best. Good work.

Cessy, this B&W is terrific. The stern face of the soldier with his big beard gives a profound mood. I like the fact that you opted to give a shallow DOF with the background loosing definition. The spires add to the stern/ profound mood.

For me this is a great photo with a wonderful atmosphere.
The black and white was necessary and I love the expression of that face and the composition.
It's amazing. I think I've traveled in time.

This is so well taken with the focus spot on the right person. The look in his eye seems to tell a story. The bokeh is excellent. The shot is nicely contrasted too. Bye the way, I find your intro photo very funny.
