[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
This is a shot from inside the Tour de Saint-Martin; the sunlight filters downward as the top of the tower is completely open to the sky. Some wild plants have sprouted on a narrow shelf that runs across the interior wall.

The tall rectangular stone tower is the only remaining intact structure of a once large and beautiful 12th Century castle that was the Chateau de Saint-Martin. The tower was the castle's keep. The only other part of the castle that remains is a long section of the exterior wall. The castle, except for the tower, was destroyed by the Bernese in 1536.

The castle was located on a hill overlooking surrounding farmlands and was protected by deep ravines on all sides. One of the proud lords of Saint-Martin, at a meeting of lords in Burgundy, was belittled by a lord of France who scoffed at the comparatively small size of estate of the Saint-Martin lords. The lord of Saint-Martin answered, “All of the accumulated harvests of your whole province would not be enough to fill even the ditches surrounding my castle.”
