Pilatusbahn is the steepest cogwheel railway in the world with a maximum gradient of 48%. The line rises from Alpnachstad by the lake Vierwaldstättersee to Mount Pilatus at an altitude of 2132 m. The line is about4.6 km long and climbs vertical distance of 1629 m, and has rail gauge of 800 mm. It was opened in 1889. To handle steep gradients safely, unique Locher rack system was developed. On this system rack is a flat bar with symmetrical, horizontal teeth. Horizontal pinion engage the centrally-mounted bar, both driving the locomotive and keeping it centered on the track.

Hi Kari,

Fascinating these red trains crawling against the steep rocks of the Pilatus.
I hope they didn’t move towards each other :- )

Hi Kari, I like this shot as it gives us an appreciation not just of the little red trains but also the terrain they operate in. Well timed getting them both in. cheers, Steve

Hi Kari,
Beautiful shot of the little red rail cars windwing up the incredibly steep grade. This image is wonderfully framed by the shear rock face cliffs lush green hills. Excellent sharpness and details to this lovely mountain capture.
Regards, Tom

Hello kari
lovely red against the green colour and rocks. very good idea to get both trains in the same picture.
Best regards
JMarc

hi kari

Some say Switzerland is paradise and I can see some glimpse here of mountainous scene with cable car. Incredible to be 48% climb, but I suppose it is slow and steady. Good pov of 2 red cars.

Hi Kari,

These cogwheel trains are as cute as toys and you have chosen a nice spot to present them.

Two for the same price as one; that's a good capture! Their red colour contrasts perfectly with the grass and rocks.

Nice one!

André

Hi Kari,
The best of your RR pix to date!! Wonderful light and color, perfect frsaming!! Capturing the car coming around the corner, where it seems it must fall off into the valley below, the intertsection of the the steep mountains and the angle of the track all convey the engineering feat proclaimed by this railway. ASnd it was built over a century ago!! To my favs
HLJ, Pat

This is a cute picture, Kari, and I really like that you have them both in your photo, the one going up, and the other one going down, slowly moving around the corner. The rocks look impressive and it has been a while since I have done Pilatus but looking at your wonderful post I might reconsider :) I am still thinking hard what I can offer you when it comes to train rides but I guess my transportation cable ride is an exciting try and it is a little scary too to be honest but tons of fun, we have survived it many times ... and the cheese salad up there (they have a little restaurant a farmer runs) is just so so good, homemade of course, and sometimes they have a little music ... we will see. I wait for you, at the postbus station ... Barbara.

Hello, Kari -
I like the sense of space and depth conveyed through your POV in this shot. Great that you managed to get both cars into the frame, especially the one coming around the bend. The sunlight is well-managed. Very nice image.
