Photographer’s Note

Today (January 7) is December 25 of Julian calendar, Xmas Day according to Eastern Orthodox Sacred Tradition. In Ukraine this is a National holiday. In a week we are going to celebrate so called “old New Year’s Day” (January 14 of modern Gregorian calendar or January 1 of old style Julian calendar), as a completion of a whole row of the main winter holidays.

We have started celebrating on December 19, Saint Mikolay Day. Saint Mikolay is the holy protector of Ukraine and his day is celebrated with giving gifts to children. Then we celebrate Xmas, both Catholic and Orthodox, and certainly two New Year's Days. At that time the commonly accepted greeting is “Zi svyatami!” (With the Holidays!).

The more extended greeting statement is seen at the center of the picture. It reads as “Z Novim rokom ta Rizdvom Khristovim!” (With New Year and Xmas!). Why New Year is first, although in both calendars Xmas Day goes before New Year’s Day? This is because a New Year is met mainly according to the new calendar on January 1, and Xmas Day’s is celebrated by the most of Ukrainian people today, on January 7.

Marry Xmas to all TE members and TE guests!

In this last year’s photo a part of the street of Academician Ivan Pavlov (eminent Russian physiologist, psychologist, and physician, 1849 – 1936; former name of the street is Konyushennaya, which means “having stables”) where commercial and exhibition complex “Radmir” is situated. Not so far from here there is the biggest Ukrainian trading center and market place Barabashovo, named after another academician Nikolai Barabashov (1894 – 1971), Soviet astronomer. Actually the market was named according to the nearby subway station, named after the academician.
