Photographer’s Note

I am keeping showing my favorite places of Kharkiv city.

This is the Victory Monument or “Glass Stream” (now more often called as “Mirror Stream”), fountain and rotunda built in 1947. In my own rating of the city’s sights it is #3 (after Annunciation Cathedral and Derzhprom building), but in the list of the Seven Wonders of Kharkiv (formed with an Internet poll) it is #5, Derzhprom being #1 and the cathedral being #4.

This generally accepted symbol of the city is situated at the main city’s street Sumskaya in the Victory square. Formerly the square was a cemetery with a small church named after Saint Myrrhbearers. The church was completely destroyed in 1930s and the place was prepared for constructing a gigantic mass performance theatre. But in 1934 Kyiv became the capital of Ukraine and the square was used only as a park. After WW II the alley of Young Heroes and the “Mirror Stream” were built there. In 2007, when the 60-th anniversary of the Stream was celebrated, it was reconstructed and illuminated. Now it is planned to rebuild the Saint Myrrhbearers’ church near the Stream to restore the square architectural view.

In the picture one of many color phases of the automatically changed illumination is shown. The colors are changed in minutes, being from purple to green and blue.

When you are in Kharkiv, remember to buy the “Mirror Stream” candy suite.
