Photographer’s Note

The site of Żółkiew has been inhabited since the 14th century. In 1594, polish Grand Crown hetman Stanisław Żółkiewski fortified the settlement and built Żółkiew Castle.
In the 17th century, it became the royal residence for King John III Sobieski of Poland, and a hub of religious life, arts and commerce.
In the 1930s my grandfather Maksymilian Adam Dobrowolski served in the Stanisław Żółkiewski 6 Cavalry Regiment in Żółkiew.
