Photographer’s Note

This church (1783 - 1880) in urban village of Krasnokutsk was the first stop in the second day of our two-day bike trip over old Ukrainian estates in Kharkivska oblast. In this regional administrative center a famous arboretum (botanical garden), former estate of Karazins family (from which the founder of Kharkiv University Vasiliy Karazin and his brother, founder of this arboretum Ivan Karazin came) are situated.

Krasnokutsk (or Krasniy Kut, which means “picturesque place”) was founded in 1651 by Cossacks as a strengthened point for defending Russian Empire’s frontiers from Tatars’ attacks. Now it is the capital of a rural region and the center of an important gas field. The number of its citizens is around 10 thousands.
