Great Gates of the Crimean Heights Photo

Photographer’s Note

This is the last kilometer on the way up to the edge of the Crimea’s biggest plateau Karabi Yayla (Qarabiy Yayla in Crimean Tatar language). The place where the road from the seaside village of Privetnoe (Üsküt, about 10 km from there) goes up to the plateau is called Bolshie Vorota (Great Gates, Balaban-Qanu). In the picture you can see the right "post" of the gate. Height of this place above sea level is about 900 m, the average height of the plateau being around 1000 m. The highest summit of Karabi Yayla is Tay-Koba, 1262 m.

The scenery is dramatic with the hard rocks emerging from the smoother surface of the mountain. Good use of the path to lead the eye into the scene.

The gravel road makes a fine lead-in to this mountainous landscape!
Interesting too see how wind and weather has made the rocks break up, and how vegetation is trying to settle in the hostile environment...

That's a beautiful, peaceful and pleasant mountaineous landscape!
The picture has excellent qualities: sharpness, exposure, dof and natural colors! The pov was very well chosen and the composition is superb: the path was nicely placed on the left leading our eyes into the scene and leaving us watching the beauties around, the valley on the right and the rocky peaks right in front of us!

Hi Sergiy,
Your title resounded in my memory banks so I got lost in your posted map yesterday and didn't get this picture commented. You are really increasing my knowledge of an area about which my ignorance is vast.

The dirt road connecting the seaport village to this massive landmark provides a great entry to the steep hillside and sharply defined rock formation. The shades of green add a feeling of harmony to the compo.
