Photographer’s Note

The imposing castle in Lutsk, dating from the mid-14th century, is the most prominent historical site of the Western Ukrainian town. The fortified ramparts and soaring towers were constructed by Liubartas of Galicia-Volhynia to serve the seat from which he ruled. The walls were further fortified over time, adapting and changing to repel artillery and gunfire and protect from invading forces that sought to capture the frontier town. The three towers date from the 16th and 17th centuries. Now regarded one of Ukraine's most important heritage sites (it is one of the few historic landmarks in Western Ukraine that survived WW2) the castle is featured on the back of the Ukrainian 200 hryvnia bill.

Hi Brian, Ukraine is an under-represented country here on TE so very happy to see such a great photo from such a great place. The castle is amazing and your Note informative. Hello Brian,

another flawless and intriguing composition of this outstanding castle. I like how the tree at the left frames the tower and the good readibility of the part of the castle in the shade. The light conditions were not easy to handle (nearly a contralight photo) but the result is quite good and fine. I wonder how it could be in colours?
Good clarity as ever in your works, and a well chosen subject.

Hello Brian !

Very nice ! I like particularly the composition and the PP in black and white in this one. Trees ans sky give good contrasts at your photo. The framing and the sharpness are very good.
The castle is nice but perhaps I would have preferred it with more light on the front in order to see better the archtecture of the castle and to emphasize more the stone. You had to wait a few hours that the earth turns! ;-))
