The Beauty of Nature, a photo from Hampshire, England

Photographer's Note

Good Morning Everyone,

It was difficult to give this shot a country of location, for it was taken in the Atlantic Ocean, between Southampton and New York, but we were closer to England, so that was my guide.

It was our first evening aboard the Queen Mary II as we headed towards New York and what a first evening! I have never seen a sky quite like it, before! There were lots of people on deck, just staring wide-eyed.

It was a fine omen for our first ever visit to the U.S.A.

I like the 45 degree angle of the sunbeams either side emanating from behind the central cloud. Wonderful warm cold colour contrasts between the blue grey sea & sky & the yellow sunlight. Well composed with the horizon line well away from the centre. Tfs!

Hello Bev - Sometimes light and clouds put on magical displays and here you have a humdinger! I think to be on the ocean and to see this display must be really fantastic as there is absolutely nothing to impede the view. Well managed exposure and very good colour detail in the sky. A fine photograph which must bring back many happy memories for you.

This is almost a Biblical scene - that break in the clouds with sunbeams streaming down reminds me of days at Sunday School when we saw pictures in which the Hand of God appeared through the clouds in a blaze of glory to save his believers or smite sinners. Are you sure that this was the Atlantic Ocean and not the Sea of Galilee?

A beautiful photograph with amazing colours and wonderful contrasts and a gloriously moody sky. Perfect exposure and excellent details and sharpness.

Hi Bev,
So, you have travelled on the QMII ! My husband worked on it while it was under construction in St Nazaire ! Got involved in the trials concerning the terrible accident of the gangway too :-((
Anyway, I didn't really want to spoil your good memories of the trip. It must have been quite an experience to witness such a sunset coming out of the clouds over the endless ocean. The golden rays look nearly divine as if Heaven was just above that dark cloud.
Magnificent palette of light and colours in the sky too.

No doubt nature gives us great and beautiful moments that are not repeated, as in the case of this wonderful composition, a superb marina with that magnificent sky, ideal those distant golden rays of the sun in the distance, this gives great DOF to composition.

very nice and dreamily the sunset scenery with the sun to be hidden behind the dense and grey cloud formations with the yellow beams to create an excellent optical effect,as falling on the far end horizon.The shapes of the clouds as their lighting are well captured.

wow...how long did that take?
guess it makes the trip that much more enjoyable.
and i guess b/c i live on the west coast of North America, taking a boat just doesn't cross my mind as an option! haha!

I'm always amazed at how dark/black the ocean looks.
