Sandsend is a pretty seaside village in the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, just north of its more famous neighbour, Whitby. In the background is Sandsend Ness, which is made up of a lot of shale left over from 19th century mines and quarries. At low tide it is possible to walk along the beach to Whitby. I’m not sure how far it is, but it can’t be more than 2 or 3 miles. In the other direction you can see Whitby from here.

Although slow shutter speeds are more suited to evening or night photography I was experimenting with the effect on the waves, so I closed the aperture as much as I could with this lens. The polariser was used more for its effect of slowing the shutter than for its normal use. I had seen the waves earlier, splashing on the rock, and had to wait ages for the next big wave. I’d almost given up, coming to the conclusion that high tide was receding, when I was rewarded.

ISO 100, FL34mm,

Last post before going off to the USA. Back some time in October.

hi Kath,
I definitely like the effect of the relatively long exposure, the wave looks like a flower now. even the clouds seem to have mooved a little adding to the mood. the patch of the blue sky is a nice accent, and I like the tall wall on the left, that's a great natural frame. in ideal world you'd have a read boat somewhere in the scene, but then the photo would have completely different mood.

best,
Kristine

p.s. where exactly in the US will you be?

Hallo Kath!
An impressive photo with a special atmosphere. The whole scenery is a bit threatening and primordial (if this is the right word ;-) The splashing water in the foreground emphasizes this impression here.
Greetings from autumnal Germany!

Hello Kath,
Great dynamics with the blurred water in the FG.
I like too technical parameters and in particular your light management, as always :o)
Have a nice evening,
JB.

Hello Kath!
The whole view is interesting and nice, but the splash of water in this one was the real highlight... I just loved it!
TFS - Congratulations!
Greetings from Brazil!

WOW. That wave must have hit with some force. Great timing there Kath. Have a nice time in the US.

Striking of water with the shingles is a pleasure to see and to listen too.

Woooohey!
Last time I was in Sandsend taking photos the tide was
very low and I could walk among these wooden thingies -
- but this, this scene at high tide looks scary!
Love the splashing wave and this almost vignetted cloud
in the upper right corner.
Also, love to see our see in blue, thanks to the sky, of
course.
Interesting framing as well.
Cheers,
Robi
PS. Have a smashing time in the Yankeeland!

Hi Kath,
Great composition here - love the motion / action of those splashing breakers in the foreground. Very well seen and TFS. Gerald

Hi, Kath -

Welcome to the USA! Please make sure your paranoia is unpacked and ready for inspection.

The first thing I noticed about this shot is the almost perfect flower pattern in the spray at lower right. That is a remarkable catch! The rest of it is great, too; the positioning of the cliff, the background shore, the clouds; but it's the spray that captures the eye.

Nice!

Bon voyage (we're still allowed to use French, but there is a guota, so don't make feel I've wasted it!),

Hello Kath,

Un dynamisme très bien capté par le choix de ton temps de pose. 1/25sec est parfait pour donner du mouvement à cette gerbe d'eau. La partie de gauche est par contre assez opressante et aurait peut-être pu être coupée au recadrage.

an interesing place near by coast, fine landscape. Good caught dynamic impact of wave. Well done photo.

Hi Kath,
I like the rocky coast in the background to me it looks similar to Madeira. Well done experiment. That fan like spray is spot on and reading your note you only had one chance.

Hi Kath,
first my eyes are attracted by the "splash" of the wave, perfectly located in the composition, light, colors and excellent DOF completes this really fine work, all my compliments!!!

Hello Kath
The fan like splash of the wave in the FG is definitely an eye catcher. The 1/25 sec is not that slow a speed, but water does look a bit blurred. Compo.wise this can't be done better IMO with good balance. Light is good & so are the colours. Well done!

Hi Kath,
Very nice view in this park.
The waves effect adds a dynamic touch in your composition.
I like also this beautiful sky, partially hidden by clouds.
Well done !
Hoa

Hello Kath,
Great capture that shows us the strength of the nature with these waves that break in the rocks, and that create a good dynamic effect.
You have worked very well with the slow shutter to obtain a magnificent effect in the splashes of the waves.
I like the result of your composition.
An excellent work, my friend.
I wish you a good trip and that you enjoy the USA.
Best regards,
Josep

Hi Kath,
Yes, you were rewarded and so are we, coming to see your gallery! Very beautiful image, the effect of the experiment you've done has a successful result, no doubt. We are lucky you had not given up! The effect is beautiful also for clouds - they were in a race!
I also like the WS, this is a beautiful place!
Thanks for sharing,

Hello kath
A nice effect. I really appreciate tjhe clarity in the distance, sky composition and green upon the cliffs.
Kind regards

Hi Kath,

Splashing water is always an fascinating object to make pictures of. It can give a good discussion if it’s better to have a long or a short shutter time. Personally I mostly choose for a as short as possible shutter time to freeze the water, but I often enjoy the solution with a longer time to bring more movement in the water. I think your presentation here is in between, with a good result.

Hello Kath:

One point of view spectacular, with beautiful hues and composition with great force. I love the stroke of the wave on the rock, a moment captured with good opportunity.

Perhaps the only thing I am not convinced that I see is lacking in certain areas definition, but generally speaking, is a nice photo and an elegant landscape.

Hi Kath. Patience has its rewards. Excellent timing to catch he peak of the action. Good sky too with that patch of blue to liven the scene. Nice work and thanks for sharing.

Hi Kath,

This photo proves that you sometimes could take marvelous pictures when it is totally unexpected. The splashing of a wave against the rock is very impressive. However, find your experimenting here very interesting. Poor lighting conditions and waves or streaming water is usually not a very good combination, especially if you at the same time would like to have a good DOF. It is difficult to take a good picture, but a good method could sometimes be to use manual setting of both shutter speed and aperture value and correct the picture in a photo editing programme if it becomes too dark. TFS this photo and note. Have nice trip to the U.S.

Cheers,

Ulf

Hi Kath, The slow shutter time really paid of here - I love the flow of the water and the radial pattern of it. Very atmospheric work anx tahnx for your tech note too.

Hello Kath,

What a well timed shot!
The wait may have seemed interminable but it was worth it! I almost ducked when I saw the wave!
You have achieved good, evening tones and big F stop has kept all the scene in focus. I like your composition too!

The whole scene reminds me of evening walks along this coast, especially in early September when we used to have a school holiday. School! What is that!!

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Kath,
a beautiful shot, you captured the movement of the water perfectly and that sky looks amazing! The shutter speed of 1/25 made the water look great. As usual great quality, thanks for sharing!

Hello Kath!
Wow, you´ve posted many really nice pictures in the time I was in Canada/USA......wow !
This photo is really nice, unfortunately I didn´t have a digital camera with me, when did and England/Scotland trip two years ago......(I don´t think we were in North Yorkshire, but at least in Cumbria at Lake District). Anyway, your photo is really beautiful and I think the most special thing is the froth in the lower right corner, I really like that!
Best regards and have a nice day,
Jonas

Hi Kath, strong photo with a lot of power within. Your wait was rewarded, too much I am sure to say. I am not sure about the visible vignetting though.
Anyway, congratulations on this powerful shot.
Nikos

Kath,
and with a big splash you're gone for some weeks to the Wild West. I hope you get all the envisioned landscapes with the right weather, light and dramatism. I already saw at least that you were at Crater Lake and wonder if you also made it to Painted Hills.
Peter

Hello Kath,
Great shot!
I realy like the low speed with makes the "splash" more powerful.
Greetings
Igor

Nice capture, the settings are ideal, to stop the time at the point you wanted to.
1/25 fast enough to capture those steady waves at the back, and slow enough to capture the movement in front. I suppose you took many picutres of the place where you kept this one where the moment is the key here and not just a simple capture of the place.
Congrats for the effort and the presentation :)

Hi Kath, You have captures the spray perfectly & it's positioning could not be better, I love the way you have slowed the sea down, the out cropping of land is a really nice backdrop, a lovely nature photo, kind regards Wilson.

Hi Kath,
I see now that I have missed this beauty. I guess that many of us would concentrate either on the bursting waves or on the panoramic view, or at least would have much difficulty in balancing both of those aspects so well as you did. I like very much the (not so pretty) light and the usual technical excellence of the sharpness and exposure.
Regards, José.

Olá Kath, I was going north of Portugal at the time of this post. The effect of that splash is so good that it's dificult to apreciate the rest of the image and also the complementar WS. I just want to enjoy the de detail of that splash over and over...As you say when speaking of waterfalls: the best shutter speed is very low or very high - it seems that it worked here as well. The green area where the sun is heating and the clouds around the blue sky make a wonderful background but this splash wins to everything else.

Hi Kath,
I was sure I commented on this lovely & successful experiment; must be my poor connection. I really like the way you used the slow shutter speed to turn the wave into a feathered fan. The waves remind that it would be a good idea to be very sure of the tide times before setting off.
