City of Dreaming Spires

The main goal of my visit to the United Kingdom in October last year was Oxford, which I had already wanted to visit for a long time (probably ever since I watched the Inspector Morse episodes many years ago). I was very lucky as well, as it was the most beautiful autumn weather one can hope for.

Oxford is a university city in the county of Oxfordshire. It is home to the University of Oxford, the oldest university in the English-speaking world, established around 1096 and regarded as one of the best universities in the world. Oxford has got about 155,000 inhabitants and lies on the River Thames. Oxford is also known as the City of Dreaming Spires.

The city centre is home to many buildings which are part of the university and colleges. Seen here is All Souls College (in Latin: Collegium Omnium Animarum), established in 1438, when it was founded by King Henry VI. Behind the twin towers of All Souls College lies New College, whose bell tower is seen to the left of All Souls. The photo was taken from another dreaming spire, the tower of the University Church of St Mary the Virgin, whose shadow is seen in the foreground as well.
