The Clipper Challenge in 1982, when two boats the barque Marques and the brig Cuidad de Inca (later renamed the Maria Assumpta), raced around Britian. I was lucky enough to take a group of schoolchildren on the Inca. We had the leg from Edinburgh to London. At the time it was the oldest wooden sailing boat still sailing.
We called in at various ports on the trip and while there showed folk round the boats and did repairs (if you look carefully you can see a couple of folk on the yardarm).
Excuse the quality of the photo, it's scanned in from a slide, now 26 years old, though I've tried to clean it up a bit and bring the colour back out.
Unfortunately both ships are now gone, the Marques sunk in the Atlantic and the Inca foundered off the south coast of England.

Hello Alistair,
Nice to see some of the older photos. Bet the dock area is changed by now, like Glasgow, flats built on the docklands.

Very interesting views from a historical point of view, espcially for me who was lucky enough to see the Maria Asumpta (formerly Ciudad de Inca) at Brest 1992. I had heard about the Marques, but never saw a picture of her before. You have been very lucky indeed to sail on one of the two ships so long ago (my own experiences only stated in 1988). Besides, the point of view from the bridge is very good for a full view of both ships.
