The Location

View of Loch Leven near Glencoe in the Scottish Highlands. There is a small island just visible in the distance upon which many of the Clan McDonald were buried following the Massacre of Glencoe on Feb 13, 1692. The island can be reached easily by boat.

The Image

Since the weather decided to remain Scottish for most of my recent visit to the Highlands I decided to make the best of it and take full advantage of the diffuse light. I slapped on a polarizer and tried to saturate the rich colors of the shiny seaweed in the foreground. The glassy water was nice too although it didn't last long. This one looks really good at a larger size.

Also used a 2-stop grad. (Apologies for misspelling 'Leven' on the frame)

Cheers!

Bob G.

Hej Bob,
great color on the ? Seaweed, because it really looks like seaweed, I maybe mix things up a bit, is Loch the scottish name for lake ?
this looks more like a seabay,
Sorry for asking silly questions about such a wonderful picture, but I'm just a curious type.
the yellow goes excellent against the preussian blue in the Bg moutain slopes.
Cheers
Anders

Hi Bob,
The seaweed color is just impressive; the saturation is at the right level. shaprness excellent and the diffuse light a gives a nostalic feel to the pic that i like. or maybe it's the clouds and reflections that i found very attractive.

pris.

Hi, I love the colors of foreground... and everything is nice composed.
What can I say: good job!

Hi Bob,
I really don`t know how you achieve this quality, this one looks too good. Perfect use of the vertical format, the rules of third are used very well and as I mentioned earlier the quality as usual simply perfect!
Love this shot, many thanks for sharing!

Take care
Mark

Hello Bob,

Un avant plan qui attire le regard ! Ce jaune est impressionnant ! Je trouve que l'arrière plan est presque invisible dans cette compo. La structure de cet avant plan enchevetré fait toute l'image.
A+

Hi Bob

nice composition with the seaweed in the foreground, colours are saturated but still natural and nicely balanced with the Grad.

Regards
Derek

Hi Bob, always the same smoothness of some small details but which make all the difference. congratulation. JO

Hi Bob,
great landscape, your inclusion of this big foreground with its color well contrasting to the rest is really great here!

Nice shot using the vertical format to really give this an incredible sense of depth. The texture and detail in that seaweed adds so much to this scene, and of course the distant mountains and reflection are fanastic too. Great piece of landscaping!

Bob,
Looks really good at this small size too! In fact, it's quite amazing just how much detail a "tiny" file can apparently retain. This still looks like a super high quality 5D shot.

Colin

Hi Bob,
I remember I loved a lot this loch when I've been in Scotland. As you said, you had not a great weather but you did very well with what you had. You used very well the seaweed to give a great DOF to the picture and create a colorful atmosphere, not easy when the sky is cloudy. I love the light on the loch in the background and the mountains reflecting in the water. Well, that's really an excellent shot ! TFS.
Regards,
Olivier

Hello, Bob!

What I like most about this shot is the proportions and the sense of depth it conveys.
Nice handling of light conditions with the inclusion of the warm seaweed colors.

A question: what filter system do you use, Lee, Singh Ray or Cokin? What would you recommend?

Thanks a lot and many regards,
René

Hi Bob, you did well here, using the weed in the FG to grab attention and lead us into the image. As I've come to expect, sharpness, colur and exposure all great. Cheers, Steve

Amazing photo Bob! Very unusual in the subject and superbly executed. The composition is perfect. Giving all this predominance to the foreground was really the way to go. Not only its color is wonderful but its organic shape gives a lot of emotion to this photo. And its sneaky diagonals in the bottom are just an extra bonus! :) Than you have the reflection and the mountains in the back. What more could I ask...? I even like the slight blue cast given by the polarizer in the top. It goes well with the mustardy yellow of the rest. Just a final note: I love those charged clouds. There is still light in them, so for me you got the perfect weather for this photo!

Hi Bob,

I love such kind of shots. Vertical framing is an excellent choice. I like a lot the seaweed in the FG. Perfect colors and DOF.

Well done!

Gio

Rich foreground, full of colour, lines and life. It overwelms the rest of the frame, but the colour transition for the upper frame is very nice (blue and orange always work fine).
As I use to say, all weather is good weather for a good photographer...
Cheers.

Bob,
stunning view! This is already a real winner in this small and compressed view. I hardly can imagine how it would look like on a larger canvas. The colors of the seaweed in the foreground is so crisp that I have the impression that I can graps it through my monitor. Looking into this here I can't imagine why you were complaining about the highland weather. The light looks dramatic with the clouds in the background and even the hills render enough details to be appreciated easily. I guess that the result of this is your flawless afterproduction.
Peter

excellent picture and a very useful note.
Thanks
