Photographer's Note

During the 2009 fringe, my wife and I went to Edinburgh. Our son was involved in an improv show and, during the week we were there, stayed with my sister near Cupar in Fife. Each day we'd drive to the Forth Road Bridge and take the part and ride bus. This took us to the bus station and the steps up come out just along from the Harvey Nichols department store on St Andrew's Square.

Every day we went past the fabulous window displays which comprised various exotic creatures, made from simple materials but in such an imaginative way.

This window is a huge crocodile - you can see how big against a full size mannequin. It's made from thousands of small, silver or copper coloured, metal 'scales' all pinned to a frame. The skin is then further textured by the addition of nuts, washers and coins.

I took the picture when the sky was overcast, which helped reduce the reflections, and with a polarising filter, though I'm not sure that had much effect.
