B&W version is here, I tossed a coin as to which should appear on the 'front page', but can't decide which I prefer.
A touch of sadness if you read the tombstone, as well as two people in their 70's (not bad for early 1900's) there is also a child of 7 months buried here (not uncommon for early 1900's). Had she survived her early years, she'd be about 92 now.
About the place:
In the middle of Highgate is what was probably the worlds most photogenic cemetry. Originally stunningly beautiful when created by the Victorians, it fell in to disrepair over the years. In the '80s a group called 'Friends of Highgate Cemetery' started to undo the damage that had been caused by years of neglect.
I'm happy and sad. Sad because scenes like the one above are now quite rare, as it has been tidied up a hell of a lot. If it hadn't though, the place would have just crumbled and rotted, and then disappeared forever. Happy that this haven of green still exists in a fairly busy town. You can really relax here and although not quite as photogenic as before, it is still a very charming place to be.
Even I missed out on the peak of it's period of decay, that would have been an awesome opportunity for a photographer.
Karl Marx is buried here, if you are interested. |
