[Ligne directrice - Note] Note du photographe
Invested in a new camera (Olympus E-1 DSLR) so as I had some holidays due from work I paid a visit to Lake Windermere in the Lake district to try it out.

The shot was taken at Ambleside on Lake Windermere.

Please note I have posted a WORKSHOP of this image which is a crop of the original which gives a closer view of some of the elements in the picture.

Windermere, at 12 miles long, one mile wide and 220 feet deep, is the largest natural lake in England, and is fed by numerous rivers. The Romans built their fort of GALAVA at its northern end (Waterhead), and it has always been an important waterway for movement of heavy materials.
Bowness-on-Windermere - Lakeland's most popular holiday resort - is an excellent centre for boating activities, with over 10,000 boats registered. Sailing, canoeing, windsurfing and water-skiing are all evident. Windermere is the only lake without a speed limit. Steamers and launches operate from Bowness Bay to Waterhead at Ambleside, and Lakeside at the southern end.
At the southern end is Lakeside Pier, and Lakeside Station of the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, and also the Aquarium of the Lakes.

Beautiful serene picture captured in a beautiful part of the world. Your composition is excellent as is your depth of view. A lovely shot well done.

La majesté de ce cygne sur un plan d'eau de mercure, une réalisation très nette qui ne souffre d'aucune imperfection technique.
Une grande impression de calme et d'appaisement.

Congratulations on your new 'baby', Stephen! How come your choice went for an Oly, again?
How much of PP is involved in this photo - as the colours are fantastic! Or is it the E-1?

Gorgeous image Stephen. Congratulations on your new toy. It seems hanging out at TE can become expensive... ;-) We see the fine work being done by folks with more expensive equipment and the lure can become too strong to resist. That certainly has been the case for me. I've no doubt you'll enjoy the pleasures of shooting with a DSLR, as I have. The increased shutter speed alone is a joy.

I want the swam off center, but the other elements of this composition work so well, I don't see how you could get there. Perhaps a shot a few moments earlier with the swan closer to shore...if it was. Or perhaps a move forward and to your right to widen that side of the image and shift the rocks farther left. The image is technically wonderful, so I'm looking entirely at composition. Food for thought I guess.

Thanks for sharing. I'll keep a closer eye on what you give us from your new camera. Have fun!

Hi Stephen. This is very calming image. I like the monochromatic colours, with great depth of field.
I have had the opportunity to spend a week cycling and photogoraphing in this region with my (now) wife.A beautiful part of the world.

i like this shot a lot but i'd rather the swan was not so centered... other than that, there is a perfect light, tones and stillness and calm.. nice shot!
Eric

Great panorama. No a prefer this one and not the workshop. The swan is quite centralised. In this picture it is not very distracting but in the workshop picture it is.
